What are the Student ADDYs?
The AAF Student ADDY® Awards Competition is a unique national awards program designed specially for college students. Work entered at your local level can move up to the regional and national judging, just like the work entered by professionals across the country.
Applicants must be enrolled full- or part-time in an accredited U.S. educational institution. Student interns are eligible to enter.
Submit work developed specifically for this competition or from previous projects or student contests (work must be created while the entrant is a student not employed in the advertising industry). National winning entries may receive the following:
- Finalist certificate—great for résumés and portfolios
- Prestigious Student ADDY Award for first-place winners
- $1,000 cash prize for National Best of Show winner
For compete details about the Student ADDY competition, visit the national site.
How do I enter?
Go to www.addycompetition.com and click on Enter (navigation on the left). It will walk you through the process of registering as an entrant. When registering, you’re your Ad Club as “AAF – Abilene.” After entering online, package your entries with their accompanying forms and bring them to your professor by December 4.
To enter, you must:
- Meet all eligibility and deadline requirements.
- Enter your entries online before you deliver them to your professor.
- Package your entries as described in the Rules and Guidelines (PDF format).
- Include a complete, signed entry form.
- Include a complete manifest form.
- Pay with check when you drop off your entry.
- Conform to defined submission requirements.
- Conform to all copyright laws.
This year, we ask all entrants to please include a CD with hi-resolution jpegs or pdfs of all entries for use in the winners presentation.
**IMPORTANT** Also at the ADDY competition site is a link to the Rules and Guidelines (in PDF format). You can download them directly from the site or from here. Included in this document are all of the rules, requirements and categories for this year’s competition. It may seem tedious to read, but most, if not all, of your questions on entering the ADDYs will be answered. Details about the Student ADDY competition begin on page 19.

FAQs
Can I mount my entries on some type of board? No. Entries must be submitted inside an appropriately sized envelope. Transparent envelopes are preferred. For all the detailed instructions for preparing entries, see the Rules and Guidelines booklet. If you have questions about preparing your entries that are not answered in the Rules and guidelines booklet, please contact Joyce Haley.
If your entry places in the Gold, Silver or Bronze category, you will be contacted to submit another copy of your entry mounted to board for display purposes. THIS IS NOT MANDATORY. It is only if you would like your work displayed at the awards show.
How do I know if my ad is eligible for the competition? All work entered in the ADDY competition must have first appeared in the media between January 1 and December 31, 2009. With the exceptions of Public Service Advertising, Advertising for the Arts, and Advertising Industry Self Promotion categories, work entered must have been the result of paid creative services and media placement in the normal course of business (exluding student entries). For more eligibility information, see the Rules and Guidelines booklet.
How do I pay? After you've completed your entries on the competition site, you will be able to print and sign the manifest of all your entries. On the manifest, you'll see the option for check. You can bring a check with your entries to the drop-off location.
Is it really that big of a deal if my broadcast entries have production slates at the beginning? It is if you want them to be judged. All entries are supposed to be void of any reference to the entrant, not including the actual entry form accompanying the piece. And, while we at the local level may show leniency, we can't guarantee that you'll get the same at the district level. It would be a shame to win a Gold locally, then have your entry disqualified at the district level, wouldn't it? So do yourself a favor, follow the guidelines, see the Rules and Guidelines booklet, and we'll all be happy.
How should I submit my videos? The only accepted format for video and television entries is DVD. Be sure that submitted DVDs will play on a consumer DVD player. If the entry cannot be played on a consumer DVD player, it is subject to disqualification. For all instructions as to preparing entries, see the Rules and Guidelines booklet.
I'm entering some print and/or broadcast in Spanish. Will our judges be fluent enough to understand? While we try to have at least one Spanish-speaking judge, we cannot guarantee fluency in the language. For broadcast, you do have the option of placing subtitles in your spots, or you can include an English script with your entry. If you include a script, please make sure it is void of entrant info, company logo, etc.
When is the judging? When will I be notified if I won anything? The judging will take place on Saturday, January 23, 2010. Once the scores have been totaled and verified, notifications will take place the following week.
Can I get my entries back? We typically do not return entries. AAF-District 10 dictates that all Gold and Silver winners be sent to the district convention, regardless of whether the Silvers are actually entered. As for the remaining entries, if there is a special request for returning a specific entry, please contact the ADDY Chair
If my entry won a Silver, can it still be entered at the district level? Absolutely. In your notification, if you have Silver winners, you will be asked if you would like to enter them at the district level. You will be asked to submit payment for entry fee + shipping. As mentioned above, your entry will be automatically forwarded.
Will there be a winners book this year? Yes! We will be handing out a booklet with a list of all the winners at the ADDY Gala on February 11.
When and where is the District ADDY Gala? The 2010 District 10 Convention will be held in Amarillo, Texas on April 14,2010.
Who can I contact if I have more questions? If you have questions at the local level, you can contact:
Joyce Haley 2010 ADDY Chair
Feray Waggoner AAF-Abilene President
Danny Flanagan AAF-Abilene Vice-President
At the district level: Marc Eisenberg 2010 District ADDY Chair
